Focus Group Report

From letting my focus group read some of my articles and look at some of the content that I have produced, I conducted 3 questions to get some feedback on my content.

The first question that i asked my focus group was “what dd you like about the types of topics that i have written about?’. From asking this question, the feedback I revived from all of my focus group was that it was easy to read and follow, it targets a variety of age ranges within the target audience range (16-24 year olds). Some people also said that they liked that i had some seasonal topics within the content.

The next question I asked was ‘Did you think that the topics related to the target audience of 16-24 year olds?’ and ‘Why?’. All of y target audience said ‘yes’. People said that his is because all the topics are rally relevant (or were relevant at the time), and are current news. They also said that they were informative (especially the one about road safety because a lot of people i this age range are passing their driving tests).

Finally, the last question i asked was ‘If my article were in a magazines would you read them?’-again, everyone said ‘yes’. The reason for this is because they said that they stand out and are fun articles to read. Some people also said that they found them informative, factual and relatable.

9.3.1 – Evaluate Product and production of Webzine

This is my finished product. I have made the design plain yet effective by not overcrowding the page nut not underling it either. I think this looks more professional because I have stuck to one one colour scheme. I used a few combinations of colour schemes to start with but decided to choose this colour because i thought it looks professional and linked with the name of ‘cool’ because blue is usually associated with cold. I decided to put really big pictures at the top because i thought this would make the webzine page look more eye catching when it is first accessed. Its also useful to have the content at the top so that the audience get a taster of what the content is going to be like in the webzine.

My webzine appeals to my target audience because it gives the information clearly and effectively and displays it in a way that 16-24 year olds will enjoy.

I asked Reece Payling (18) a journalist student what he thought, he said “I really like how as soon as you go onto the page there are big pictures. I think that this makes the page more appealing and makes me want to read on. I also like the bar on the right hand side with the hashtags because its very modern. However, i don’t like all the blank space at the sides”.

When creating my logo, I have followed up on my research by making 2 letters bigger than the rest to make it more rememberable like on Zoellas or WordPress websites where the ‘Z’ and the “W’ is bigger than the rest of the letters. This could then be easily made into a favicon of CS standing for CoolSite.

I have also made it clear and easy visualise because when researching, I found out that people didn’t like webzines that much because they found them hard to use and read, therefore I have made it clear to see and haven’t made it too crowded.

People also didn’t like webzines because they found them hard to navigate I found out in my research, therefore I have also made this easier by including a navigation bar so people can easily make there way around the website without having to worry about getting back to where they need to be because they can always press the ‘home’ button to get back to the home screen.

When making my real site, I will take in mind what my target audience has said so that i can keep the features that Reece said he likes and hopefully improve it.

9.1.2 – Interpretation of Research and Intended Use

A webzine has many influences and consequences on its target audience. One of them is that the audience feels closer to the creator of the webzine and its content as they can access it wherever and wherever, whether its in their house or across seas. When the producer has any kind of content that the audience would be interested in, it immediately gets uploaded online to webzines and social media, this impacts the audience really quickly and efficiently.

From researching about a webzine, I have learnt that the small details thing matter such as the logo, favicon, the navigation etc.  All these small factors make a webzine more interactive and fun for the user. Many people use webzines a lot more than print magazines now because its cheaper, eco friendly and many other factors, so making it look as good as a magazine is important. From looking a the stats of the age range of people who use webzines rather than magazines, I have noticed that the more younger generation tend to use webzines more, therefore when creating my webzine I will ensure to make it so that it appeals to a younger target audience.

From researching the cons of webzines, some people find them fairly confusing to use. It also mentioned that some people may find it harder to read. From this information I will ensure that my webzine is clear and not too crowded in terms of pictures and text everywhere. I will make it easy to navigate so that people can make their way around the webzine easily and efficiently.

When creating the logo for my webzine, I will make it clear and simple yet effective. When researching other webzines logos such as Zoella, I have noticed that it includes the name of the website with the first letter taking up most of the room. This then creates an image that everyone remembers and associates with the webzine. e.g. in the Zoella logo the ‘Z’ is really big compared to the rest of the therefore this is the most rememberable part of the logo. This also tends to be the favicon icon, so when creating my logo I will include the first letter to be larger than the rest.

From looking at the features of a webzine theme that you can purchase, it has a Responsive & Retina Ready Design, Fully Customizable via WordPress Customizer etc. These features contribute to what makes the webzine more interactive and easy to use, therefore when I create my website I will ensure that it includes these features.

9.2.1, 9.2.2- Plan and Develop

This is a sketch that I did to plan what my webzine is going to look like. I based this on previous webzines that I have recently research. I have taken into consideration all of the features that a webzine needs to make it easy to use such as a navigation bar.

Before getting to the final product, I first experimented with multiple themes. I also added different widgets so that I could see which ones fitted best in the webzine. I liked this design because it looks simple and you can see everything on the homepage on how to navigate, however, I chose to go with a different theme because I wanted you to be able to see a couple of articles and their images when you first clicked on the age rather than having to scroll down to view more.

I found a theme where it allowed you to have featured articles. I lied this because it looks more visually attractive and it gives you an insight as soon as you click on the homepage on what the articles are going to be about. I also experimented with different fonts to see which one looked best with he thereof my website.

I also looked at the composition of the navigation bar by seeing what it would look like at the left, middle or right. In the end I preferred the navigation bar to the left because I found it looked more tidy.

I then had a look at other details about the composition of widgets and the way you access them. For example such as this social media interaction bar, I can choose to either display it as a button that you press and open them, or already visible on the homepage.  decided to have them as a button that you click into because again, it looked more neat and tidy.
