9.3.1 – Evaluate Product and production of Webzine

This is my finished product. I have made the design plain yet effective by not overcrowding the page nut not underling it either. I think this looks more professional because I have stuck to one one colour scheme. I used a few combinations of colour schemes to start with but decided to choose this colour because i thought it looks professional and linked with the name of ‘cool’ because blue is usually associated with cold. I decided to put really big pictures at the top because i thought this would make the webzine page look more eye catching when it is first accessed. Its also useful to have the content at the top so that the audience get a taster of what the content is going to be like in the webzine.

My webzine appeals to my target audience because it gives the information clearly and effectively and displays it in a way that 16-24 year olds will enjoy.

I asked Reece Payling (18) a journalist student what he thought, he said “I really like how as soon as you go onto the page there are big pictures. I think that this makes the page more appealing and makes me want to read on. I also like the bar on the right hand side with the hashtags because its very modern. However, i don’t like all the blank space at the sides”.

When creating my logo, I have followed up on my research by making 2 letters bigger than the rest to make it more rememberable like on Zoellas or WordPress websites where the ‘Z’ and the “W’ is bigger than the rest of the letters. This could then be easily made into a favicon of CS standing for CoolSite.

I have also made it clear and easy visualise because when researching, I found out that people didn’t like webzines that much because they found them hard to use and read, therefore I have made it clear to see and haven’t made it too crowded.

People also didn’t like webzines because they found them hard to navigate I found out in my research, therefore I have also made this easier by including a navigation bar so people can easily make there way around the website without having to worry about getting back to where they need to be because they can always press the ‘home’ button to get back to the home screen.

When making my real site, I will take in mind what my target audience has said so that i can keep the features that Reece said he likes and hopefully improve it.

9.2.1, 9.2.2- Plan and Develop

image1.JPG

This is a sketch that I did to plan what my webzine is going to look like. I based this on previous webzines that I have recently research. I have taken into consideration all of the features that a webzine needs to make it easy to use such as a navigation bar.

Before getting to the final product, I first experimented with multiple themes. I also added different widgets so that I could see which ones fitted best in the webzine. I liked this design because it looks simple and you can see everything on the homepage on how to navigate, however, I chose to go with a different theme because I wanted you to be able to see a couple of articles and their images when you first clicked on the age rather than having to scroll down to view more.

Screen Shot 2017-04-28 at 11.40.28

I found a theme where it allowed you to have featured articles. I lied this because it looks more visually attractive and it gives you an insight as soon as you click on the homepage on what the articles are going to be about. I also experimented with different fonts to see which one looked best with he thereof my website.

I also looked at the composition of the navigation bar by seeing what it would look like at the left, middle or right. In the end I preferred the navigation bar to the left because I found it looked more tidy.

I then had a look at other details about the composition of widgets and the way you access them. For example such as this social media interaction bar, I can choose to either display it as a button that you press and open them, or already visible on the homepage.  decided to have them as a button that you click into because again, it looked more neat and tidy.

This is my finished webzine.

Literature Review 12.2.1, 12.2.2

In this review, I will be evaluating how useful certain sources were and what types of sources I have used. I will be discussing the strengths and weaknesses of sources and explain how its going to help me produce my specialist study report. After I have conducted all of my research, my hypothesis is that most media sources portray women in an unrealistic light which causes women and especially young girls to want to become this unrealistic image, which is not possible. This will help me when writing my essay which is about how the media portrays women.

I have used a variety of academic and cultural sources to contribute to my research, one of the academic one being books. I researched books from Understanding Women’s Magazines (Anna Gough-Yates, 2001). This book talks about the changing landscape of women’s magazines, but I found some very useful quotes about how women’s magazines i.e. the media portray women. I found that this was a reliable book because it had some very truthful and useful information. However, it is from 2001 and therefore could be slightly outdated as magazines are rapidly changing in terms of content. Nevertheless, I found that the information was valid for what I was trying to find out.

One of the cultural sources that I have used is a blog. This blog was all about the portrayal of of women in the media and consequently was very useful to what I wanted to find out. The fact that this source is someone’s opinion means it has strengths and weaknesses, a strength being that the blog proves that this subject is an issue, which is why people are writing about it. A weakness is that it may not be as reliable because its only one persons thought on the subject.

Another cultural source I have used is the news. I have found a news article on The Independent on 30th December 2016, headlining “Sexist slant in media representation of women ‘needs to change’”. This is a very reliable source because its dated less than a month ago. Its also a very strong piece of evidence for my research because the fact that its made the news proves that the representation of women is a big issue that people all over the UK are recognizing.

Another book that I researched was Media and Society Critical Perspectives (Graeme Burton, 2003). This mainly summarised how we understand the interaction between media and society. I found a few useful quotes in this book about how women and portrayed and even some about how men are portrayed which was useful to compare with. This was a useful source to me because I found some good information that I have contributed towards my research. However, again the book is quite outdated due to how fast the media develops and changes so may not be 100% reliable. Nevertheless, even though the book is from 2003, it does give me an indication of what the representation of women was like back then.

Overall, I found some very useful and interesting information that I can use in my essay. I think that the all the sources that I have used are all reliable in different ways and all have strengths and weaknesses. However, generally I think that the news article that I have researched was the most useful source because this source speaks for a very large range of people, and they wouldn’t be publishing it if very few people didn’t have these opinions.

Evaluation

Overall, I feel like my interview went really well. I went into the interview quite confident and came out the same way. When i went in, i shook the interviewees hand and introduced myself. I got constant feedback along the way of the interview on how  was doing and to start off with they said that  came across as confident which is a good thing.

I answered the questions confidently and feel like i gave reasonable good answers and tried to make everything as positive as i could.

I had a problem within the interview which i can learn from in the future, I prepared n online portfolio of my college and photography work that i could show her if she asked to see some of my work- which she did. However, there was no computer in the room and i could not access it on my phone because there was no service in the room that i was in. This is a mistake that i can learn from in the future by always taking a physical copy of my work because i don’t know the circumstances of where in the interview is taking place.

I also got some feedback on my CV, my interviewee told me that I had repeated myself a bit in a big paragraph and needed to short it down to bullet points so that people can easily find the information that they need.

She also said that in the CV I mentioned having software skills but didn’t really mention which software i had them on,therefore I need to update this.

What am I going to achieve today?

Today I am going to write a story based on the photos that I have taken. I have taken a total of 5 photos all together to write stories with and I want to get at least 1 story complete today. I also want to have thought of another idea of what I can write about for the Sheffield Star by the end of today’s lesson.

Complete? Today I have managed to complete the goals that I have set.
